Areas Covered

Leh - Leh was the capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Ladakh, now the Leh district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Dotted with stupas and crumbling mud-brick houses, the Old Town is dominated by a dagger of steep rocky ridge topped by an imposing Tibetan-style palace and fort. Here, gushing streams and narrow footpaths link traditionally styled Ladakhi buildings with flat roofs, sturdy walls and ornate wooden window frames.

Nubra Valley - The Nubra Valley, once on the trading route that connected eastern Tibet with Turkistan via the famous Karakoram Pass has been opened recently to the tourists. Dotted around the valley are ancient gompas and ruined palaces and villages are close enough together to make this magnificent walking country. The main attraction of the Nubra valley are the Bactarian Camels (Double hump Camel).

Pangong Lake - Situated at a height of about 13,900 ft, the name Pangong is a derivative of the Tibetan word Banggong Co meaning "long, narrow, enchanted lake". One third of the lake is in India while the remaining two thirds lies in Tibet, which is controlled by China. Majority of the streams which fill the lake are located on the Tibetan side. The first glimpse of the serene, bright blue waters and rocky lakeshore remains etched in the memory of tourists. There is a narrow ramp-like formation of land running into the lake which is also a favourite with tourists.

Shopping And Entertainment

Shopping in Ladakh can be a wonderful experience. Some of the important shopping hubs are as follows:

**Leh, Ladakh **- Shopping in Leh is an experience in itself as the main bazaar gets full with souvenir shops and boutiques during peak tourist season. Though mostly selling Ladakhi and Tibetan handicrafts, the shops are largely owned by Kashmiri traders. There is also a cluster of shops in Leh that sell carpets, handicrafts, and curios from the Kashmir valley. Souvenirs on sale include local household items like the tea and chang vessels, cups, butter churns, knitted carpets with Tibetan design, jewellery, semi-precious stones like turquoise, coral, prayer flags, musical instruments, and dance masks. The main markets in Leh are Tibetan Market off Old Leh Road for clothes and Moti Market near the Leh bus stand. Popular items with tourists are Pashmina shawls, stoles and other Pashmina wool garments. Locally handmade woolen socks, gloves, caps and sweaters are a favorite of tourists in Ladakh. Tibetan handicraft items including prayer wheels, Buddhist masks and Thangka paintings can be purchased in Ladakh. Tibetan silver jewelry and traditional Ladakhi jewelry with turquoise are also popular with tourists. Apricots that grow abundantly in Ladakh are another popular gift that you can take back as a delicious souvenir of your trip to Ladakh. The main markets in Ladakh are the Ladakh Art Palace on the Main Bazaar Road,Tibetan Handicraft Emporium on the Main Bazaar Road, Ladakh Environment and Health Organization on the Main Bazaar Road,Tibetan Handicraft Community Showroom in Choglamsar and the Cottage Industries Exposition in Changspa.

Money- The currency of India is Indian Rupees (INR). The currency exchange departments are present in almost every Indian city. You can also exchange your currency in 5 star and 4 star hotels, no other currency is valid except for Indian currency (INR).
