City Description


Puri is a city and the district headquarters of Puri district, Odisha, eastern India. It is situated on the Bay of Bengal, south of the state capital of Bhubaneswar. It is also known as Jagannath Puri after the 11th century Jagannath Temple located in the city. Puri is a holy city of the Hindus as a part of the Char Dham pilgrimages. According to Hindu teachings, a pilgrimage of the temples of India is not considered complete without a journey to Puri. Puri is endowed with one of the best beaches for swimming in India and is therefore also a popular beach resort, especially as it is positioned geographically so that both sunset and sunrise can be viewed from the beach. Sun Temple Konark is at distance of around 35 Km from Puri.

Chilika Lake - Chilika, the largest brackish water lagoon from the sea coast, over an area of 1100 sq kms covering parts of three districts of Odisha. The vast congregation of migratory avifauna that flock there in every winter are over 160 species in peak season. The Irrawady dolphins and red crabs are some of the unique features of this beautiful lagoon, Chilika, an emerald in the east.

Konark Sun Temple - The world heritage monument Konark "The Sun Temple" Designated as a Chariot of the Sun god with 12 pairs of exquisitely decorated giant wheels, each of 10ft. high, fixed on either side, drawn by seven horses. The temple symbolizes the majestic stride of the Sun god.

Lingaraj Temple - The temple of Lingaraja, the biggest and oldest of all temples in Bhubaneswar is located within a spacious compound wall of laterite measuring 520 feet by 465 feet. The wall is 7 feet 6 inches thick and surmounted by a plain slant coping. Alongside the inner face of the boundary wall there runs a terrace probably meant to protect the compound wall.

Udayagiri & Khandagiri Caves - Are the caves of archaeological, historical and religious importance near the city of Bhubaneswar in Odisha, India. The caves are situated on two hills Udayagiri and Khandagiri, mentioned as Kumari Parvat in Hathigumpha inscription and face each other across the road. They consist of fine and ornate carvings. It is believed that most of these caves were carved out of huge residential blocks for the Jain monks, during the reign of King Kharavela. Udayagiri meaning Sunrise Hill, has 18 caves while Khandagiri has 15 caves.

Dhauli - 8 km south of the present Bhubaneswar, across the Daya river, Dhauli has major edicts of Ashoka engraved on a mass of rock. It is presumed to be the area of the bloody battle of Kalinga, won by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka in 265 BC. This is said to be the earliest rock cut structure in India. However, today the more visited site is, Vishwa Shanti Stupa, Peace Pagoda, at the top of Dhauli Hill. The five chhatris (umbrellas) placed on its flattened top represent five important aspects of Buddhism.

Nandankanan (The Zoo) - Nandankanan National Park - Located at a short distance from Bhubaneshwar, there lies a miraculous zoo in the splendid environs of the Chandaka forest. The zoo contains a botanical garden with the soothing sound of water of the Kanjia Lake. It is famous for breeding black panthers , Gharial crocodiles and white tigers in captivity, because a part of it has been declared as sanctuary.
