City Description

Amritsar is one of the largest holy cities of the Punjab state in India. The city origin lies in the village of Tung, and was named after the lake founded by the fourth Sikh Guru Ram Das in 1574 on land bought by him for 700 rupees from the owners of the village of Tung. Amritsar's central walled city has narrow streets mostly developed in the 17th and 18th century. The city is a peculiar example of an introverted planning system with unique areas called Katras. The Katras are self-styled residential units that provided unique defense system during attacks on the city.

Places of Tourist Interest:

The Golden Temple Amritsar (The Harmandir Sahib) - Although there are a number of Sikh shrines in and around Amritsar, Golden Temple is the biggest of all tourist attractions in Amritsar. The shrine houses the holy script of the Guru Granth Sahib and draws its name from the gold-laden dome upon a marble base. Inside lies the holy lake. Do cover your head with a handkerchief or a scarf before entering the Gurudwara.

Jallianwala Bagh - In 1919, the British Police fired randomly on a peaceful assembly of people gathered in demand of freedom, which killed hundreds of men, women and children on the spot. The bullet marks on the boundary walls bring alive the agonizing tale of cruelty of colonial rule.

Wagha Border - Defining the Indo-Pakistan border, Wagah is just 28 km from the main town of Amritsar. The 'change of guards ceremony' at sunset draws a good many spectators.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh Panoramio - Maharaja Ranjit Singh, more popularly known as 'the Lion of Punjab' was not only a great son of Punjab but was also among the few leading figures of the history of that period. The deeds of Maharaja Ranjit Singh will remain as permanent marks in the annals of sikh history.
