Introduction

Pench National Park is blessed with rich flora and fauna. Pench is full of references of the naturally blessed ambiance and lush greenery. The park is bounded by the serene ambiance of the Pench River and is very popular for having plants of great medicinal value. There are more than 1300 species of rare plants of medicinal value. In Pench, Cheetal, Sambar and Nilgai are commonly seen grazing on the open sites on roadsides and banks of river & reservoir. Jackals can be seen in search of food anywhere in the Park. Packs up to 15 of wild dog can be seen near Chhedia, Jamtara, Bodanala and Pyorthadi areas of the Reserve. Herds of gaur can be spotted near streams and bamboo patches commonly in summer months. Sloth beer occupies hilly, rocky out crops and favour mahul bel infested forest. Chnkara is present in very small numbers and is found in open areas around Turia, Telia and Dudhgaon villages. The large Pench reservoir within the park with its numerous islands provides a magical setting for boating. Motorboats, Paddleboats and rowboats are available for the tourists at Chhindimatta. Rafting can be done in the Pench River outside the park between 1st September and 15th October. The forested banks of the river along with rocky stretches of the river locally called kassa, made for an adventurous and memorable experience.

Flora and Fauna in Pench National Park:

It is blessed with forests spread in all the direction. As per the physiognomy, the forest type is southern tropical dry deciduous teak and southern tropical mixed deciduous forest with other species of shrubs, trees and climbers. Bamboo occurs sparsely, restricted to some valley. Pench National Park is rich in fauna, and is home to a number of endangered species. The tiger is the dominant predator here, and there are an estimated 25 of them in these prey-rich forests. The other predators include leopard, dhol (Indian Wild Dog), wolf, hyena, and jackal and jungle cat. The prey species comprise of chital, sambhar, muntjac, gaur, wild boar, langur and rhesus macaques. There is a rich birdlife with over 300 recorded bird species, including parakeets, hornbills, kingfisher, barbets, minivets, orioles, wagtails, and a host of raptors; the crested serpent eagle, crested hawk eagle and white-eyed buzzard.

A very famous attraction, Jungle safari is very common sight among tourists visiting Pench. Tourists can glimpse a large variety of animals and birds especially large group of cheetal numbering over a thousand in a Jeep drive.

Elephant Rides

The town is very prominent for tigers which are an amazing attraction for locals as well as tourists. An elephant ride is a delightful experience in the forests of the city to catch a glimpse of the wild cat.
